Why choose QRdx over Hovercode?
The areas where QRdx is the stronger pick. The guide below also covers where Hovercode is the better choice.
Unlimited dynamic codes for $5
Hovercode Pro costs $12 a month for 100 dynamic codes in total. QRdx Pro costs $5 a month, or $48 a year, with unlimited dynamic codes and hosted pages.
Cancelling doesn't switch codes off
Hovercode's pricing page says that after cancelling, only your first 3 codes stay live and custom-domain codes stop. QRdx dynamic codes keep redirecting on every plan, including after a cancellation.
More seats and domains per dollar
QRdx Business is $15 a month with unlimited team members and 25 custom domains. Hovercode's Business plan is $39 a month for 10 seats and 10 domains.
Open source with a full developer toolkit
QRdx is AGPL-3.0 and self-hostable, and its REST API is on every plan, alongside an MCP server, a React library and a CLI.
QRdx or Hovercode: which should you use?
Hovercode and QRdx are closer than most QR tools: both make dynamic codes with unlimited scans on every plan, both have hosted pages and analytics, and neither puts ads in front of your scans. The main differences are how much you pay per code and per seat, and what happens to your codes if you stop paying.
Who each tool is for
Hovercode is a good fit for marketers who want GPS-level scan locations and are fine paying per code. Pro is 120 a year) for 100 dynamic codes in total, and Business is 390 a year) for 600 new codes a month, 10 seats and 10 custom domains. Business Plus is $99 a month.
QRdx fits people who want unlimited codes cheaply, teams that need many seats, and developers who want an API and an open-source codebase. Free includes 10 dynamic codes, Pro (48/yr) makes codes and hosted pages unlimited, and Business (144/yr) adds unlimited members, webhooks and white-label pages.
Where Hovercode is the better choice
- GPS scan location. Hovercode's Business plans offer GPS scan locations. QRdx records country, region and city from the network, not GPS.
- High-volume monthly allowances. Business Plus allows 2,000 new codes a month with 25 seats and 50 custom domains in one plan.
Key differences
- Code limits. Hovercode limits dynamic codes on every plan (3, 100, then a monthly allowance). QRdx limits only the Free plan, to 10.
- Cancelling. Hovercode says that on cancellation your account drops to Free, the first 3 codes stay live and the rest become inactive (but are kept), and codes on custom domains stop. Under QRdx's Never-Hostage Guarantee, every dynamic code keeps redirecting on every plan.
- Developer access. Hovercode's API and bulk creation are on its Business plans. QRdx's REST API is on every plan (1,000 requests a day on Free), with bulk creation on Pro, plus an MCP server, a React library on npm and a CLI.
- Static codes. QRdx has 33 free static code types that work without an account, including Wi-Fi, vCard, UPI and other payment codes.
- Openness. QRdx is open source and self-hostable. Hovercode is not.
Switching from Hovercode
- Keep your Hovercode codes in print running: check which ones stay live on the plan you move to.
- Create new codes in QRdx for upcoming print runs. Existing Hovercode short links can't be moved, because they redirect through Hovercode.
- Recreate multi-link and PDF pages in the QRdx page editor, then test every code on real phones before printing.
