Free SMS QR Code Generator
An SMS QR code opens the messaging app with a phone number and, optionally, a message already typed in. It is used for text-to-join lists and opt-in keywords ('Text JOIN to...'), support lines, votes and contests, where getting the number and the keyword exactly right matters.
The reader still presses send, and their own carrier rates apply. Keep the prefilled message short and clear: it is exactly what you will receive, so it should tell you what the person wants.
How to create a SMS QR code
- 1Enter the destination number with its country code.
- 2Optionally type the message, such as a keyword like JOIN.
- 3Scan the preview to confirm the messaging app opens with the number and text.
- 4Download the code as PNG or SVG.

SMS QR code format
Format
SMSTO:<number>:<message> or sms:<number>Example
SMSTO:+14155550132:JOIN- With a message, QRdx uses the SMSTO:number:message form, which phone cameras and scanner apps widely recognize. Without a message it writes a plain sms: URI (RFC 5724).
- The number is reduced to digits and a leading +.
- The message is stored as you type it, without URL encoding.
SMS QR code FAQ
Does the text send automatically?
No. The messaging app opens with a draft, and the person has to tap send.
Who pays for the message?
The sender pays whatever their plan charges for texts. Short codes and international numbers may cost more.
Why SMSTO: instead of sms:?
SMSTO: is a de-facto QR format that carries the message body in a way scanners understand; sms: is the IETF URI scheme. QRdx uses SMSTO: only when there is a message.
Can one code text several numbers?
No. A code holds one destination number. Text-to-join services use a single number or short code plus a keyword, which works well with this format.
