Free Wi-Fi QR Code Generator

A Wi-Fi QR code lets guests join your network by pointing their camera at it, instead of reading out a 20-character password. The camera apps on iPhone and on most Android phones (or Google Lens) recognize the format and offer to join the network.

It's popular in homes, cafés, holiday rentals, offices and event venues. The network name and password are stored in the code itself, so it works without an internet connection. Anyone who can photograph the code can read the password, so put guest-network codes where only guests can see them.

How to create a Wi-Fi QR code

  1. 1Enter the network name (SSID) exactly as it appears, including capital letters and spaces.
  2. 2Choose the security type: WPA/WPA2 for almost every modern router, WEP for very old ones, or No password for open networks.
  3. 3Enter the password, and switch on Hidden network only if your router doesn't broadcast its name.
  4. 4Scan the preview with your phone to test that it joins, then download and print.

Wi-Fi QR code format

Format

WIFI:T:<WPA|WEP|nopass>;S:<ssid>;P:<password>;H:<true|false>;;

Example

WIFI:T:WPA;S:Cafe Guest;P:latte\;art;H:false;;
  • This is the de-facto Wi-Fi format documented by the ZXing project. Fields can appear in any order, each ends with a semicolon, and the record ends with an extra semicolon.
  • The characters \ ; , : and " in the network name or password must be escaped with a backslash. QRdx does it for you, so a password of latte;art is stored as latte\;art.
  • T:nopass marks an open network and the password field is left out.
  • H:true tells the phone the network is hidden, so it connects even though the name isn't broadcast.

Wi-Fi QR code FAQ

Is it safe to put my Wi-Fi password in a QR code?

The password is stored in plain text inside the code, so anyone who scans or photographs it can read it. Use a separate guest network, and change the password and reprint the code if it leaks.

Why won't my phone connect?

Check that the network name matches exactly (it is case-sensitive), that the security type is right and that you're in range. Enterprise networks that need a username or certificate (WPA2-Enterprise) aren't supported by this format.

Does the code still work if I change the password?

No. The password is inside the code, so after changing it on the router you need to generate and print a new code.

Is my password sent to QRdx?

No. The code is generated in your browser. The details you type are remembered only in this browser so you can continue in the full editor.
