QR codes for banks and financial services
Banks and insurers use QR codes to move customers from paper to their app: on statements, branch posters and cards. Because financial QR codes are a favourite target for fraud, the code also has to make it obvious that it is genuine.
That means links on the institution's own domain, plain instructions that the code never asks for a password, and codes that open public pages, with the customer signing in only inside the official app.

Placement tips
- Print the domain the code opens next to it, and a line such as 'We will never ask for your PIN or password through a QR code.'
- Never put a code on a page that asks customers to sign in outside your official app or website.
- Inspect posters in branches and ATMs for stickers placed over genuine codes.
- Use separate codes per mailing to measure which statement inserts drive app downloads.

QR codes for banks and financial services: FAQ
Should banks use QR codes, given QR fraud?
Yes, carefully. Use your own domain, link only to public pages or the app store, tell customers what genuine codes look like, and never ask for credentials behind a code. These steps make your codes easy to verify and fakes easier to spot.
How do customers know a bank's QR code is genuine?
The link preview shows the domain before the page opens. If every code uses your official domain and you publish that domain, customers can check it.
Can a QR code open our app directly?
An app download page shows the App Store or Google Play button based on the phone. Deep links into an installed app depend on your app's own link setup.
