QR codes on envelopes
The envelope decides whether a mailing is opened. A QR code on the outside with a reason to scan (a preview, an offer, an RSVP) can get a response even from people who never open it.
Anything on the outside of an envelope is public, so the code must never reveal personal information. And it has to stay clear of the address window and the postal service's own barcodes.
What to link from QR codes on envelopes
Teaser offers
A code on the outside that opens the offer inside, for people who won't open the envelope.
Wedding and event invitations
A code on the invitation envelope that opens the RSVP or wedding page.
Return envelopes
Charity and survey return envelopes with a code to respond online instead.
Statements and bills
A code that opens the paperless sign-up page.
Which QR code to use
Static codes are free and need no account, but can't be changed after printing. Dynamic codes and hosted pages can be edited at any time, count every scan, and keep working on every plan, even if you cancel.
Dynamic code per mailing
Measure responses from the envelope separately from the letter inside.
Create a dynamic codeEvent page
Date, time, venue, organiser and add-to-calendar links, plus an .ics file for any calendar app.
Invitation details, map and calendar buttons for invitation envelopes.
Build it in the dashboardFeedback and forms page
Star ratings, NPS and questions, with responses collected in your dashboard.
A response or RSVP form for return envelopes.
Build it in the dashboardHow big to print it
| Where people scan | Distance | Minimum code width |
|---|---|---|
| Envelope in the hand | 30 cm (12 in) | 3.5 cm (1.4 in) |
For a dynamic short link such as https://qrdx.dev/q/aB3dE5f at error correction Q, without the blank margin. Static Wi-Fi, vCard or long URL codes hold more data and need to be larger. Check yours with the print size calculator and the scan checker.
Placement tips
- Keep the code away from the address window, stamp area and the bottom strip where postal barcodes are printed.
- Don't link the outside code to anything personal; the envelope can be read by anyone handling it.
- Kraft and coloured envelopes need extra contrast; print solid black.
- About 3 to 3.5 cm is enough for a code read in the hand.
Call-to-action copy
A code with a reason to scan beside it gets more scans than a bare code. Lines to print next to yours:
- Open me, or scan for a preview
- RSVP in 30 seconds
- Reply online instead
- Go paperless
QR codes on envelopes: FAQ
Can I put a QR code on the outside of an envelope?
Yes, as long as it doesn't interfere with the address, stamp or postal barcode areas. Check your postal service's guidelines for the clear zones.
Is it safe to put a QR code on the envelope?
Only if it links to something public. Never encode or link personal information on the outside of mail.
Can I measure how many people scan the envelope?
Yes. Use a different dynamic code on the envelope and the letter, and compare scans in the dashboard.
